This is a vintage genuine horse hide shell hanging strop. It is in excellent condition. It is very pliable, even surfaced, with no dings, cracks, cuts or age deterioration, etc. Horse shell is the very best leather for a strop. Shell is made from the butt or rear end of a horse. This area because of its smooth and compact surface texture. It provides the smoothest of all possible leather surfaces and was the most desirable type of surface by the old timers back in the day. This is because the smoothest leather surface will re-align the cutting edge to the sharpest keen edge possible.

This strop will last a lifetime if taken care of. It has had the necessary amount of neatsfoot oil applied to it to preserve and maintain it's pliability. It also has an application of Fromm's Strop Dressing applied to its surface. It is suggested to keep strop dressing on the strop surface. A 4 oz. bottle of strop dressing will last a lifetime. It will provide the necessary drag (very light resistance when stropping).

Just spread about 5 or 6 drops on the strop's surface and rub it in with the base of your palm when the surface loses its drag, about every 6 months. This will preserve and condition your strop and keep it stropping the cutting edge of your razor from shave to shave.

This strop has the attached separate woven linen strop as well. This linen strip and the leather strop are held together by a brass hardware clamp and swivel snap. Most experienced straight razor users do not use the linen side, but some do. It is recommended not to use the linen side until you have become experienced at shaving and stropping, Then, if your curiousness gets the best of you, you will have some experience to guide you.

This strop measures the more standard strop size of 24" long by 2 1/2" wide and a generous 3/16" thick.

To prevent memory bends when mailing, this strop will be well packaged laying straight out in a 36" long USPS priority mailing tube.
