Here is a Wade & Butcher, big 8/8 wide chopper bladed razor. Not too many of these big blades still around and in usable condition. It has a few blemishes and manufacturing marks of the era it was made in, but none that are detrimental to this razors use. Thew most distinguished blemish is plainly visiblew on the front blade face just over the printing. This blemish looks to me to be a slip of a buffer that was done by a previous owner. As with all Wade & Butcher razors this razor was made in Sheffield, England. It is in excellent condition. Wade & Butcher is one of the few, most famous and highly sought after razor makers of the 19th century. There are many different dates that have been published as to when Wade & Butcher was in busines. Probably the most accurate is that they were in business starting sometime in the 1820's until 1959..Printed on the front blade face of this razor are the words, "The celebrated Hollow Ground Razor, For Barbers Use". While it is a hollow ground razor it is to be considered a quarter hollow ground razor. This blade is one inch 8/8 wide and is made of carbon steel. I have replaced the badly bug eaten and wedge end cracked, original horn scales with brand new exotic wood scales. They are made from bocote which is often used in jewelry making, sporting equipment, etc., The blade of this razor has the proper opening and closing tension and it opens and closes in the center between the scales. This razor comes with it's original box that has been capped at one end. It is in perfectly solid, sound and usable condition. You don't find many razor boxeas that were made wide enough to accomodate wide bladed razors. Probably wide razors were mainly sold without boxes. This razor has been honed to provide a smooth, close and comfortable shave this razor comes guaranteed shave ready.
