This is a Robeson Shuredge straight razor. In it's day Robeson made some of the highest quality and most ornately designed and manufactured razors. Based on the tang stamp quote, ROBESON / ShurEdge (script) / ROCHESTER, N.Y. 1911 - 1921, unquote, this razor was made during the 1911 to 1921 time frame. This razor was made in Rochester, New York. What is unique about this razor is the grind. The grind is a rarely used, biconcave hollow grind, which is much more difficult to manufacture than a standard hollow grind. Please copy and paste the following link to view a photo of this biconcave blade shape.
The biconcave provides a sturdier and stronger flex of the blade and so is almost never used. Of more than 6,000 razors I have seen only this razor and about two others. The condition of this razor aesthetically shows some inconsequential marks on the blade faces. These can be seen in the attached photos. They do not hinder the razors shaving use in any way. Indeed it does shave as well as any razor and may due to the biconcave style and shape, it will have a slightly more rigid feel. This may be to the liking of those that prefer the feel of a heavier blade. Being that the aesthetic appearance is slightly off, is reflected in the lower price. The blade is 5/8 wide, is made of carbon steel and carries it's original, black celluloid, factory embossed scales. Mechanically this blade opens and closes with proper tension and closes perfectly between the scales. Honed to perfection to provide a smooth, close and comfortable shave, this razor comes guaranteed shave ready. A great shaver that will provide at least one lifetime of great shaves.
